In A Horrific Incident In Gujarat, Cousin Blackmails Minor Into Having Sex With Him; Gets Her Pregnant

When the going gets tough, we more often than not turn to our family for support. We expect our family to help and support us. Family is considered to be one of the strongest bonds that an individual develops when they are born. But what happens when it is the family that betrays us? We have heard enough stories of how one or the other family member(s) has murdered, raped, and or molested the other. Who do you turn to then? Who do you trust then?

Recently, a 17-year-old minor girl in Gujarat was allegedly raped repeatedly by her 25-year-old cousin brother. This case in Rajkot, Gujarat came to light when the mother of the minor noticed visible changes in her body, and after medical examinations, it was confirmed that she was five months pregnant. Upon knowing about the pregnancy, the parents filed a case against the cousin.

According to the police reports, the minor girl had gone to her cousin’s wedding last year, when she came in contact with one of his friends. Soon the friend and the girl developed feelings for each other, which her cousin came to know about later.

And six months ago, the cousin blackmailed the girl to reveal the affair to her parents if she did not concede to his sexual demands. The girl, who is the only child of her parents, was then taken to different places near her house and was sexually abused by her cousin. He even warned her to not tell anyone about these assaults.

The minor feared her cousin so much that she kept quiet and took the assault. But when her mother noticed the changes in her body, it was when she was confronted and the girl opened up to her mother about the incident. The mother then pushed for a medical examination that revealed that the girl was five months pregnant.

After which, the mother filed a complaint against the cousin at the Aji Dam police station. One of the reports stated that “We have registered an offense and will arrest the accused soon. He saw the messages on his friend’s phone and took photos of it to threaten the girl.”

Our parents tend to trust our family members more than they trust our friends, but that definitely doesn’t ensure safety. We need to ensure that our women are strong enough to fight the assaults themselves. We need to create a safe space, where they can openly come and communicate with us without feeling the need to hide something.

We need to ensure that the women growing up have a voice that can and will not be easily suppressed.
