World Arthritis Day: Women Are Prone To Early Onset Of Arthritis, Here’s How You Can Protect Your Bones

I remember growing up one of the things my mother used to run behind me (and still does) to do compulsorily was drink milk. At that time, I would fuss and moan and throw tantrums about not wanting to drink milk, and it is today, at the age of 25, I have come to realise that I was an idiot for not obeying her. Because reading about how poor bone health can weaken them can make me prone to so many bone-related diseases scares the shit out of me today. One of the common bone-related diseases is arthritis which has become a health hazard for most people.

When there is swelling arises between joints, it causes arthritis. The symptoms of arthritis are limitations in movements, pain in the joints, stiffness and swelling. And surprisingly enough, women are more prone to this disease than men. As if handling the duniya bhar ka bojh on our shoulders was not enough, now we have to live in fear of our bones deteriorating faster than men! Well, October 12 is World Arthritis Day, here are some ways you can keep your bones strong and prevent the early onset of arthritis.

Maintain healthy weight

Both women and men are prone to arthritis and one of the leading causes of this disease is obesity. As women undergo menopause, this causes a rise in their weight due to a hormonal imbalance. This increased weight, then, falls on the joints which causes severe wear and tear in their cartilage. Therefore, it is important to maintain a steady and healthy weight.

Exercising is very important

People tend to think that exercises are only to keep the heart healthy and strengthen arm and leg muscles. But to prevent your joints from deteriorating, you need to exercise regularly to strengthen the muscles around them as well. Exercising does not always mean a full-blown workout in the gym. Basic stretches and flexibility exercises should be a part of your routine to take care of your bones.

Incorporate important nutrients in your diet

Diet plays a very important role in protecting your bones from arthritis. Omega 3 is one of the most important nutrients that help in strengthening bones. Fishes like sardines and salmon are a rich source of omega 3. Those who are vegetarians can get their healthy share of omega-3 from chia seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, sprouts and kidney beans. Apart from these, calcium is our go-to nutrient.

Taking care of your bones is just as important as taking care of your heart and other vital organs. Arthritis is such a disease that can’t be reversed and is incurable. Therefore, you need to be mindful of your nutrient intake and understand that women are more prone to the deterioration of bones. You cannot neglect your bones. Even if you do not like milk, you can add different supplements to it to make it tastier.
