Honestly Though, Does The Completely Misogynistic Ishq Vishk Need A Sequel?

Remember, and this one is for the 90s kids, when our now suave heartthrob, Shahid Kapoor was introduced as the dreamiest chocolate boy with a movie called Ishq Vishk in 2003? It was monumental and went to on to define teenage for every kid on the block?

A movie that launched a line of newcomers from Shahid to Amrita Rao and Shehnaaz Treasurywala, each character we identified with. Except, while we loved the teenage drama and are suckers for romance, we perhaps didn’t see this movie for all that it was.

For starters, what could the sequence possibly offer? If you trim off all the romantic bits, the original plot is more than a little flawed. It basically promotes boys objectifying girls based on their looks, popularity and how willing they are to put out. Of course, there was a telling scene about how hot the house help looks while bend over and cleaning, which is just, bizzare. And then, it gets better here.  The premise of the movie is that the good girl gets passed along for refusing to giving to the guys physical advances. He opts for a more glam girl (such depth) and later on realising how that may not work well, goes back to the good girl. Such consolation, much wow. Except, no.

With the producers now confirming a sequel to the 16-year-old movie, we know that they are hoping to cash in on the immense popularity of the original. But must we really have a sequel to a rubbish movie sugar-coated as a college romance? Then again. Masti had Grand Masti, so maybe there is an audience for this.

Producer Ramesh Taurani stated to Mumbai Mirror, “Yes, we are making a sequel to Ishq Vishk. The story is in the scripting stage and could be about a teenage romance or a college romance. Hopefully, in the next two-three months, we will lock the script and start looking for the director and cast.”

With movies like Gully Boy, Padman and Uri making the rounds, that serve up important issues or perhaps a reality check, we are unsure whether this will be all that well received. Guess, we’ll have to wait to find out!
