Why No.1 Batswoman Mithali Raj Is A True #GirlBoss

This has got to be the best news for women this week! The captain of the Indian cricket team, Mithali Raj has been ranked No.1 in the ICC ODI rankings, and it’s a victory that deserves a celebration! TBH, we’re having a major fangirling moment!

Wondering why? Well, it’s not just because the 34-year-old sportswoman has brought Indian women’s cricket into the spotlight for the first time and led the team to victory, but also because she’s a real #girlboss!

Take a look at 5 awesome things you didn’t know about the girl who’s taking the sports world by storm.

SHE’S NOT JUST INTO SPORTS, SHE READS TOO.

Remember the photo of her reading on the sidelines as she waited for her turn to bat in the ICC Women’s World Cup? Mithali was reading… wait for it… Rumi! If you’re wondering which book, it was The Essential Rumi, a collection of the poet’s works translated from Persian.

SHE WORKS WITH UNICEF ON GIRL CHILD ISSUES.

The Arjuna award-winner knows the struggles women face, and has lent her voice to raising awareness on girl child issues. Mithali has said that, “When you choose a life, which is different from that which is scripted by society, you are bound to face challenges.” She envisions an ideal world for women where there is no gender bias.

SHE’S BEEN TROLLED FOR WEARING UN-SANSKAARI CLOTHES, AND SHE’S NOT SORRY!

The batswoman, who led the Indian Women’s Cricket team to their first World Cup, had uploaded a photo with her pals on Twitter and received a barrage of tweets telling her that she wasn’t dressed appropriately. Some even asked her to take the photo down because she’s the face of the country. She refused to do so, and later, at an event, said, “Women should not be judged for what they wear.” You go, girl!

SHE SUPPORTS OTHER WOMEN.

In a world where women can sometimes be their own worst enemy, she’s not afraid to be a cheerleader for other women. We love the way she lauds other sportswomen on social media and encourages others to do the same.

HER AUTOBIOGRAPHY WILL BE PUBLISHED NEXT YEAR.

In 2018, Mithali, who has been credited with bringing Indian women’s cricket into the spotlight, will come out with her autobiography that will give you a sneak peek into her personal and professional life. P.S. She promises to be candid AF.
