Facing A Shortage, BMC Asked For 50 Private Doctors And 250 Signed Up Within An Hour To Treat COVID-19 Patients. Our Faith In Humanity Is Restored.
When I was a kid, I wanted to become an army doctor because a) I am a nurturer and b) I have been fascinated by the army. My grandfather was an army man and even though he passed away a couple of months before I was born, the stories I heard of him made me admire his grit and determination. In fact, there are several people in my family in defence forces and I admire their bravery and strength. It’s not just about being physically fit and disciplined; they also have a great amount of control over their mind and emotions.
Today, as we are in the middle of pandemic with more patients and lesser number of doctors, this too feels like a war-like situation. These doctors are the soldiers at the forefront fighting a fatal disease and stretching themselves thin. Doctors are working at a stretch for 40 hours and surviving on biscuits and water. According to an earlier report by Economic Times, there is only one doctor for every 10, 189 people in India.
Mumbai too is facing a major shortage of doctors. Which is why, BMC requested Indian Medical Association (IMA) for 50 private hospital doctors to join the govt centres treating the coronavirus patients. But just in an hour, around 250 doctors including pulmonologists, physicians, anaesthetics, radiologists, gynaecologists, etc. signed up!

These are the city’s top doctors who didn’t think twice to join the war against the new coronavirus. They know they have signed up for hours of continuous service, with little chance to even eat, sleep or maybe even catch a break. They know that the health workers all around the world are in some danger because they come in close contact with the patients, with some having caught the virus themselves. Yet, they leave everything aside and volunteer to contribute to humanity. Each doctor will be given an honorarium of Rs 80,000 each.

Already 115 doctors have been sent for training and will be appointed at the 5 civic-run hospitals in Mumbai treating COVID-19. Reports suggest that BMC will add 15 more hospitals in a week for the same. This is really heart-warming and giving us hope.
