Okay, You’re Going To Drink, So Here Are 5 Relatively Healthy Cocktails That Will Give You The Buzz

The classic American motto for the holiday season has always been “eat, drink and be merry”. While it is a fitting mantra, it also leads to us consuming a whole lot of calories that frankly are not needed and avoidable. Obviously, this season is such that you can’t cut down on food even if you tried. So why not slash the calorie intake by knowing which alcohol and cocktails are the healthiest?

Now before you read any further, I just want to say that when I say “healthy cocktails” I don’t mean like these are protein shakes that will give you six-pack abs or might cure a disease (Maybe a Hot Toddy can cure a cold though). These will still affect your liver and give you a sounding hangover the next day, depending on how much you drink. But if you are going to consume alcohol it should be one from this list because these are the ones with the lowest calorie count. Which basically means, you will be avoiding those empty calories. Take a look!

Bloody Mary

Probably the only form of tomatoes I like. After ketchup, of course. A couple of good Bloody Mary’s is all you would need to be all set for the night. They taste good, two Bloody Mary’s will get you tipsy and the best part? It has only 118 calories. The three main ingredients of Bloody Mary are tomato juice, celery and of course vodka, making it one of the healthiest drinks on the bar menu.  I mean, it’s practically a salad. An additional benefit of a Bloody Mary is thanks to the tomato juice, it is loaded with Vitamin C and E.

Screwdriver

With two parts vodka and five parts orange juice, the screwdriver is not only one of the yummiest drinks, but it has a very low-calorie content- 164 calories only. For all those vodka lovers out there (my mother included) stick to screwdrivers all night and you don’t have to worry about bloating up. Another reason to stick to this classic cocktail is that consuming alcohol washes out water-soluble vitamins like vitamin C. And do you know what is rich in vitamin C? Orange juice. Pro tip: ask the bartender if he has unsweetened OJ to make it even healthier.

Mojito

I know what you are thinking, why is a drink that is known for being sweet on this list? I’ll tell you why, the main ingredients of a classic Mojito are- mint leaves, water, lime juice, soda, simple syrup and of course rum. Except for the simple syrup which you can very easily ask the bartender to skip, all the other ingredients are naturally low in calories. If you want to reduce your calorie intake even further, switch the rum out for vodka.

Tequila Soda

A nutritionist’s favourite drink, tequila soda has only around 100-150 calories. Compared to all other alcohols, tequila has the lowest glycemic index. Which means it takes longer for your body to convert it into glucose and that is what makes it healthier. Tequila is also made from agave which is what gives it that slight sweetness. Plus of course, soda and lime have almost no calories. Now I know what I am sticking to this New Year’s.

Moscow Mule

Everyone loves a good Moscow Mule. It is refreshing, yummy and of course very healthy (otherwise it wouldn’t be on this list). It only contains around 120 calories, making it one of our hot favourites this holiday season. A Moscow Mule contains ginger beer, vodka and lime juice which are pretty low in calories by themselves. Plus, it packs a whole lot of vitamins too, which balance out the water-soluble ones that you will lose due to the vodka.

So, what’s your poison going to be?
