All You Need To Know About The Indigenously Developed Vaccine Against HPV And Cervical Cancer

The special indigenously-developed HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, CERVAVAC has been developed with the sole purpose to protect all girls and women in the country against the pain and danger brought in by the four strains of HPV and cervical cancer and is expected to become available across the country by April-May 2023. The development of this impactful vaccine by the Serum Institute of India is one of the most essential strides made by the medical and health industry of India, this year. The vaccine can truly save lives by protecting Indian women against HPV and cervical cancer.

This medical marvel has also paved the way for a much-needed nationwide immunization drive. This drive will be initially be targeting the immunization of all Indian girls between the ages of 9 to 14 years, against HPV and cervical cancer. This plan made by Dr N K Arora, the chairperson of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI), is scheduled to be rolled out in the year 2023. Here’s hoping that we so adhere to the plan.

Contrary to most expectations, the pricing for CERVAVAC is going to be quite affordable. It is expected to be rolled out and priced between Rs. 200 – 400. This not only makes it a much-needed cheaper and more effective alternative to the expensive vaccines that are currently being circulated in the country but, it also makes vaccination against HPV and cervical cancer a ready and accessible option for everyone, around the country.

According to the study conducted by FOGSI Gynaecologic Oncology Committee, we lose one woman every eight minutes to cervical cancer in India and CERVAVAC is here to change that. This vaccine is undoubtedly set to be a game-changer and it will definitely help the country win the fight against cervical cancer.

Dr N K Arora’s nationwide immunization drive against HPV and cervical cancer will draw inspiration from the fabulous example that was set by the Sikkim government. They managed to vaccinate 97% of the girls aged between 9-14 years in the city when they were in their campaign mode and now, the city offers regular vaccination as a part of routine immunization.

There still are quite a lot of barriers against this immunization because of the backward thinking-based social stigma which is attached to women’s sexual and menstrual health.
