Brother And Sister Get Married At Mass Wedding To Avail Benefits

I have always heard of people doing fake proposals at restaurants to get free deserts. I have also heard of male-female friends fake that they’re dating to get special benefits. However, I was yet to hear of a brother and sister fake being a couple for any benefits. The idea of it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. However, that has now been heard of too as this pair of alleged brother and sister from Tundla in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh got ‘married’ to avail the benefits under the mass wedding ceremony which was being conducted under the Chief Minister scheme.

On December 11, a pair of brother and sister decided to get fake married to gain the benefits the mass wedding scheme has to offer. Chandrabhan Singh who is the assistant development officer of the social welfare department has filed a complaint against the man (brother) and the household items they were given under the scheme have been taken back. The man who is the alleged brother did this to gain household items and cash awarded to couples for marrying in the mass wedding ceremony. The mass wedding took place in the Tundla Block Development Office in which, 51 other couples also got married.

Naresh Kumar who is the block development officer of Tundla asked for clarification from the officials who verified and oversaw all the couples who participated in the mass wedding. These officials include Marasena Kushalpal (Gram Panchayat Secretary), Anurag Singh (Gram Panchayat Ghiroli Secretary), Sudhir Kumar (ADO Cooperative), according to reports. Sudhir Kumar said that action will be taken against the people involved. He also mentioned that an FIR has been filed and the brother’s Aadhar card is being verified.

While I do find this whole situation to be mildly amusing, I have to say that I kind of feel sorry. To think that people are in such a position to have to fake getting married at a mass wedding ceremony just to get cash and household items is concerning. What is the main cause of incidents like these and what can we be doing better? This is something the government needs to look into.
