Bhasha Mukherjee, Miss England 2019, Left Her Crown To Resume Her Duties As A Doctor To Help Patients Fight Coronavirus

Every time I sit down to watch beauty pageants on TV, with a bowl full of popcorn in my hand, and a mind full of prejudice as I pass comments on the fake standards of beauty and perfection by women who looked like they were all cloned, I wondered if there ever would be a time when women of actual substance, knowledge and a will to change the world would be crowned. Of course, they kept offering me world peace and we just had to be happy with that. And I admit, my views are biased against pageants but I was more than delighted to have been proven wrong by Miss England 2019.

You see, coming from a school of thought where pageants are but a way to promote only a certain type of beauty, without giving a damn about her personality, her nature of work or her desire to make the world better, I was convinced that such shows are just gimmicks and promote superficiality. But  Bhasha Mukherjee, who won the title of Miss England in 2019 decided to resume her work as a doctor when the world was struck by the unanticipated coronavirus.

Having graduated from the University of Nottingham, this 24-year-old pageant winner who was born in Kolkata but raised in UK, was in the middle of her humanitarian trip to India when the deadly virus broke out. Realising that no humanitarian work would ever hold a candle to being out there in the hospital, helping her colleagues and patients fight against Covid-19, Bhasha returned back to the UK to resume her duties.

She admitted in a interview with an international news channel about how, “It wasn’t a tough decision. I’ve been to Africa, Turkey, and India was the first of the Asian countries I was going to travel to. After India, I had several other countries that had to be cut short because of, obviously, the coronavirus. I knew the best place for me would be back at the hospital.”

Bhasha was on an international trip where she was fulfilling her commitments to humanitarian work, visiting schools and making donations in study material, stationery, etc. while also taking care of abandoned little girls. However, she felt like her real calling was back in the hospital, for in middle of such a crisis, wearing a crown and looking pretty was the last of her concerns. She said, “When you are doing all this humanitarian work abroad, you’re still expected to put the crown on, get ready … look pretty. I wanted to come back home. I wanted to come and go straight to work.” And come home, she did.

She further said, “I felt a sense of this is what I’d got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now.” She also said, “There’s no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need.”At the moment, currently self isolating herself for 14 days, Bhasha is set to resume work soon after, and we can’t be more proud of women like her out there, who not only realise the need of the hour, but are there at the forefront, fighting it with all their might.
