Wait a minute, what did he just say?
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Gets Slammed For Telling Women The “Appropriate Age” For Motherhood

Women at every stage in their lives are often told to follow certain rules, in order to attain a healthy and prosperous life. Many times people, especially men in powerful positions have presented a piece of their mind, and called it a society’s belief, as they tell women, what they should do. And doing exactly so was Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma who took the centre stage for an imperative matter, but ended up suggesting women to follow their biological clock.

While addressing an event in Guwahati, and talking about women’s safety, CM Sarma, reiterated the cabinet’s decision of taking serious action against men who get married to girls aged 14 or below. Under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, this remarkable decision by the government, is to regulate marriages that involve underage brides and to prevent them from being sexually exploited.

Having said that, Sarma on Saturday, added a special message for women, by telling them about the “appropriate age” to get married and have kids. In his speech, the Assam CM shared, “We have been speaking against early motherhood. But at the same time, women should not wait too long either as many do.” He further shed light on the biological cycle of a woman, and how it should be respected. He also added how women should get married and have kids in the age bracket of 22 to 30 years, as he further suggested women celebrating their 30th birthday to marry soon.

While his cabinet is making sure to reduce the mortality rate in mothers and newborns, by putting down rules on men or families who force minor girls to be mothers, he also shared that them getting married and having kids later than 30 can also cause complications. And while many appreciated the Assam CM for his efforts towards women’s health, what many found disgusting was his opinion on a woman’s biological cycle. Soon after CM Himanta Sarma’s words took over the internet, many women activists slammed the Assam CM for “moral policing,” and how he should concentrate on more important issues than telling women what to do. Many Guwahati-based activists and journalists also slammed the CM for making such inappropriate comments and suggested he should think about better ways to offer livelihood in the state.
