French City Changes Rules To Allow Women To Wear Burkini In Swimming Pools, Interior Minister Legally Challenges Move
Several state-run pools in France had banned Muslim women residing in the country from wearing burkinis. Burkinis are a special kind of swimwear that covers the body of women entirely from head to toe and also comes with a hood. The ban was implemented with the notion that allowing Muslim women to wear burkinis does not go hand-in-hand with the value of secularism that they staunchly believe in. But recently, the Alpine city in Grenoble, in a radical move, has changed its swimming pool laws and has now begun allowing women to burkini.
As per reports, Alpine city has allowed all kinds of swimwear suits and not just the traditionally mandated swimming suits for women and men before. But this sudden change in the rules did not sit well with the Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin who has called this move to be an ‘unacceptable provocation’ that is ‘contrary’ to their values. He has also said that he asked for a legal challenge for the implementation of these new rules.
The government has been given the right to challenge those decisions that they think go against France’s secular values under a new law that they had passed to counter Islamic separatism. Many mayos in southern France had begun banning the Burkini but these restrictions were withdrawn on the grounds that were discriminatory. It was also stated that burkinis were not banned on the basis of religion but rather on hygiene grounds.

But Grenoble’s mayor Eric Piolle has welcomed this new change in the regulations. He said that he wants women and men to be able to wear and dress whatever they want.
