Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board Chief Says Hijab Ban Not Right But Education Must Be Prioritised

Ever since the Karnataka High Court pronounced its verdict upholding the hijab ban in the hijab row case, it seems to have intensified as the petitioners have approached the Supreme Court and others have protested against the decision by boycotting classes and examinations. Amid this chaos, the Muslim religious body, All India Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) has welcomed the hijab ban with open arms. The president of AIMWPLB, Shaista Amber said that the Karnataka High Court’s order must be respected while adding that the judiciary and the constitution are above everything else in the country.

In a conversation with Times Of India, Shaista Amber said that if schools have a dress code then the same should be followed while adding that education must be prioritised as it is also a sign of faith in Islam. The president, who is a women’s rights champion, stated that the student move to bring uniforms in educational institutes and ban hijabs is beyond her understanding. The AIMWPLB chief went on to add that in Islam hijab is a ‘modest and civilised’ way to cover the head and body but it doesn’t require women to cover their faces. She also said that people should have the right to wear whatever they want and exercise their right to choice under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

Speaking further about Karnataka High Court’s decision to uphold the hijab ban, Shaista Amber said that if educational institutes have a dress code then it must be followed because education needs to be a priority as it helps build the community which in turn aids the country in achieving great heights.
