Karnataka Hijab Row: Muslim Students Protest Against The HC Judgement, Boycott Classes And Examination

As we all know, the Indian media is concentrating on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine but the conflict in our nation is also getting more serious after the recent High Court hearing. Recently, the Karnataka High Court pronounced the verdict in the hijab ban case. The High Court upheld the ban and declared that educational institutes can prescribe uniforms. After the judgment, many Muslim students started protesting against the verdict by boycotting classes and examinations.

On Tuesday, the Karnataka High Court delivered the verdict upholding the hijab ban in educational institutions. The court dismissed the petition filed by the Muslim students seeking permission to wear hijabs and burqas in schools and colleges stating that school uniforms do not violate the rights of the students and hijab is not an essential part of the religion. After the judgement was passed, Muslim students in Karnataka decided to boycott classes and examinations to protest against it. In a video, some Muslim students wearing hijab can be seen leaving the college building.

Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir expressed her disagreement with the judgement and called it disappointing. In the tweet, she wrote, “Karnataka HC’s decision to uphold the Hijab ban is deeply disappointing. On one hand we talk about empowering women yet we are denying them the right to a simple choice. Its isn’t just about religion but the freedom to choose.”

The whole controversy began in January after an educational institute in Karnataka did not allow some female students to enter the classroom as they were wearing hijabs. Soon after, the Muslim students protested against the hijab ban and filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court regarding this matter.
