After Insensitive Remarks, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant To Take Steps To Fight Crimes Against Women

We are all well aware of all the atrocities that keep happening with women every day. The crimes against women don’t seem to be reducing and I think it is a sad fact that women of all ages are at risk in every part of the world. But what’s even sadder is that our politicians have zero empathy or sense to talk about these incidents. This was made evident when there were reports of 2 minor girls being gang-raped on a Goa Beach earlier this year and the Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant made some very insensitive remarks in terms of the crime. However, he has apologised and is now talking about all the taking steps to fight crimes against women.

During the initiatory function of the National Woman’s Parliament, Minister Pramod Sawant said, “We will take more steps towards the safety and security of women in the coming days,” according to TOI. While he has expressed grief over all the crimes against women, CM Sawant has said that Goa beats all the other states in the actual detection of crimes as the detection rate in goa is 93%. He further talked about Goa having 33% reservation for women at the Panchayat and Zila Panchayat. He also claims that Goa is gradually getting self-reliant, something that will happen by this year itself. Minister Pramod Sawant also encouraged women to attend the function and participate in debates regarding matters of the state and centre to give their opinions on women’s issues within the country.

This is because the National Woman’s Parliament has been organised to help women in matters of career, business, employment and leadership and has participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir.

While I am yet not over the insensitive statements made by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, I am relieved to know that there are some reforms in place to better understand and prevent crimes against women. Considering how big Goa is as a tourist destination, it is even more essential to secure safety for women there.
