‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Early Reviews Are Out And It’s Being Called “Terrific, Awe-Inducing, Meta Mind-Bender”

The reviews are in!!!! The Wachowski charm is back on the silver screen after almost 2 decades with The Matrix Resurrections. Directed only by Lana Wachowski this time, the 4th instalment of this series has received mixed reviews, ranging from being called “exposition heavy” to “a mind bender, capturing the legacy of the franchise”. The Matrix Resurrections brings back the universally adored, breathtaking Keanu Reeves, and Carrie-Anne Moss from the original trilogy. The rest of the star-studded cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as some notable cast replacements, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen-II replacing Lawrence Fishburne as the Morpheus and Johnathan Groff replacing Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith.

The cyberpunk action Sci-Fi genre was revolutionized by the Wachowski Sisters with The Matrix (1999), with Bill Pope on cinematography and was thought to be a spectacle that represented the turn of the century. Even though the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, which were released in 2003, were not well-received by audiences, they set a brand new industry standard when it comes to set design, make-up and costume, stunt and action choreography, cinematography and storyboard design that has inspired films of similar genres to-date.

This instalment has been received relatively well, although described as being uncomfortably meta at times. Film critics and reviewers have taken to social media as soon as the embargo lifted on Thursday to flood the forums with reviews and first impressions. There have been a lot of raving reviews for The Matrix Revolutions. Film critic Courtney Howard absolutely loved the movie and called it “awe-inducing.”

Special Effects Historian, Heather Wixon reviews the film as being enjoyable and one of her favourites this year saying, “my fave movie of 2021.”

Spencer Perry of the Atlanta Film Critics Circle took to Twitter to review The Matrix Revolutions.

On the other end of the spectrum, the film has received much negative criticism as well. Matt Lynch, co-host of The Suspense Is Killing Us, describes The Matrix Revolutions as being underwhelming but seems on the fence about meeting expectations:

Jeff Nelson of Cheat Sheet was pretty unimpressed and called it “an almost 2.5-hour exposition dump”

People Editor Nigel Smith had a pretty neutral view of The Matrix Resurrections as he took to Twitter and said,

The Matrix Resurrections premieres in theatres and on HBO Max on December 22. Is The Matrix Resurrections a worthy successor to the previous movies? Hard to say until I watch it myself. From the reviews, I’ve gotten a fair idea that this film has the good elements of The Matrix (1999) combined with the not so good elements of the sequels. We all love a little balance and The Wachowskis have always delivered so far and the talent of the entire cast is unparalleled. It has been 18 years since the last film in the franchise and the hype upon the announcement of this sequel was unbelievable. Does it live up to it? Only time will tell.
