Gucci Family Not Happy With Their Legacy’s Portrayal In ‘House Of Gucci’, Issues Statement

Whenever something from real life is adapted into a movie or series, there are always debates around the accuracy of the way most events or people are portrayed in the movie. These discussions or inaccurate portrayals can hurt a lot of sentiments and spark conflicts. One recent example of this is the portrayal of the members of Aldo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci featuring Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Salma Hayek and Adam Driver amongst others.

The members of Aldo Gucci have issued a statement saying that they are “a bit disconcerted” by how they and their family legacy have been portrayed in Scott’s movie. The statement claimed that “The production of the film did not bother to consult the heirs before describing Aldo Gucci — president of the company for 30 years (played by Al Pacino in the film) — and the members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them,” they continued, “a tone and an attitude to the protagonists of the well-known events that never belonged to them,” additionally, they said, “This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.”

The statement also calls out how socialite Patrizia Reggiani (who is played by Lady Gaga) “is portrayed not just in the film, but also in statements from cast members, as a victim trying to survive in a male and male chauvinist corporate culture.” However, she was originally declared guilty of expediting the murder of Maurizio Gucci who was the one-time head of the family’s fashion house (and is portrayed by Adam Driver).

This cannot be completely falsified as during the 1980s when the film is set there were many women that held high positions at Gucci; for example, the Head of Global PR and Communication, a member of the BOD and the president of Gucci America, as noted in the statement issued.

The statement said, “The members of the Gucci family reserve the right to take action to protect the name, image and dignity of themselves and their loved ones.” However, no action has yet been taken by the family against Scott’s Scott Free shingle and Universal.

I do agree that if a movie is to portray a family and business legacy such as that of Gucci, it would have been ideal for Ridley to consult the heirs of the family for a more accurate portrayal in House Of Gucci. However, we all are aware of how common it is for controversies to be a part of such stories and histories. Now whether or not the Gucci family takes any action against Ridley, only time will tell.
