Exclusive: MJ Reflects On The Current K-pop Scene, Performing Solo, And More!
In an exclusive interview, ASTRO’s MJ shared his thoughts on the current K-pop scene, how it really feels to take the stage completely on his own, his plans for an Indian concert, and other matters.
MJ is easily one of the most beloved idols in K-pop, and he just dropped his very first physical solo single album, Right…?. Everyone knows him for those massive powerhouse vocals and his infectious, bright energy, but this new release really shows how much he’s growing as an artist outside the group. We got to sit down with him for an exclusive interview to find out his thoughts on the current K-pop scene and how it really feels to take the stage completely on his own, plans of an Indian concert, and more. 1. Performing solo means holding the audience’s full attention for the entire show. What goes through your mind during those quiet moments on stage alone, and what do you miss most about having the other members sharing that space with you?
A: When I’m on stage by myself, there are moments when I feel nervous because I have the responsibility of carrying the entire performance on my own. But at the same time, I’m gradually discovering the joy of filling the stage in my own way while being able to feel the fans’ expressions and reactions more closely. When I’m performing with the members, there’s a natural chemistry where we can connect just by looking at each other, as well as an energy that comes from communicating with the fans together. I do sometimes miss those moments, but these days, I really want to show more of the sides and charms that I can only bring to the stage as a solo artist.
2. As a senior 3rd-gen artist, what stands out to you about how newer groups express themselves today, and which current-gen song is on heavy rotation on your playlist?
A: When I look at the younger artists these days, I feel like there are so many different ways for each of them to express their own colour and individuality. I’m really impressed by how they show their unique charm in so many ways, not only through music and performances but also through various other forms of expression. Personally, I’ve been listening to WISUE’s “Dear my last summer”, a lot lately. I usually listen to all kinds of music regardless of genre, but whenever I listen to this song, it naturally makes me feel calm and relaxed, almost like I’m being healed, so I find myself coming back to it often.
3. Also, as the oldest member, there is often an unspoken expectation to be the pillar of strength for everyone around you. How do you give yourself permission to be vulnerable, and where do you go to recharge when your own cup feels empty?
A: I think I’m most honest with myself when I’m working on an album. I also feel like I show my most genuine self when I really dive into and practise the work I’m given. When I’m feeling emotionally drained, I tend to spend time with the members.
4. Your versatility across trot, musical theatre, and ballads has really defined your career, and fans are constantly analysing which style showcases your voice best. Artistically, which of those genres demands the most from you emotionally, and which one feels like your true home base right now?
A. The emotions conveyed may vary slightly depending on the genre, but I think I always pour out the same emotions I want to express, regardless of the genre. And when it comes to which genre feels most natural to me, I think it’s difficult to choose just one because each genre has its own unique feel and charm.
5. Fans on X went crazy for your red hair during your solo fan meeting. If you had to describe your current style and era in just three words, what would they be?
A. If I had to describe it in three words, I’d say music, energy, and joy. With this promotion, I wanted to show my own unique style and colour, and I wanted to share the bright energy I have through my music and performances and enjoy it together with the fans.
6. You have a massive, incredibly devoted fanbase in India that follows your work so closely. Knowing how much love is waiting for you here, what are your thoughts on coming to India for a show or fan event in the future?
A: I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to meet you whenever we can. More than anything, I hope we can meet soon and spend some wonderful time together.
