‘Selfiee’ Review: This Takraar Between A Superstar And His Fan Just Clicks, Supporting Cast Is Love!

Not exceptional but definitely enjoyable!
‘Selfiee’ Review: This Takraar Between A Superstar And His Fan Just Clicks, Supporting Cast Is Love!

As an audience, you can’t help but form preconceived notions about certain films before their release. And there are many factors that contribute to such negative impressions, like the songs or the actors involved. Similarly, I had my dilemmas about Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi’s comedy-drama Selfiee which is the remake of Driving License, a Malayalam film. It also features Diana Penty and Nushrratt Bharuccha in lead roles and is a Raj Mehta film. To my surprise, many aspects of this film appealed to me and I was happy to have been proven wrong. Selfiee is a story that revolves around a fan and his love for a superstar, had elements both good and bad but does leave you with a smile in the end.

Set in the city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Selfiee starts by introducing us to an RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) and his little son Gappu. The father and son duo have immense love and adoration towards the great superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar)and we see this, in the very beginning. They dream of taking a selfie with him someday. Now, this plot is a story of every common man, you see. Celebrity culture is crazy in India today. And that’s the reason why Om Prakash’s character becomes a relatable one for the audience. The battle between the biggest fan and his superstar starts over a driving license, BTW. Vijay Kumar who Om Prakash considers his God meet at the RTO office for the first time but well, it does not turn out to be as expected! Vijay Kumar insults his fan over a minor misunderstanding and oh, that’s where the whole plot takes a quick turn. In no time, the fan turns into the biggest enemy of his God and Selfiee further proceeds to become a story about the constant battle between the two.

Nushrratt Bharuccha plays the role of Om Prakash’s wife and is the fan of another not-so-famous actor played by Abhimanyu Singh, whose sole motive is to destroy Vijay Kumar and have a solo release someday. Meghna Malik who plays Vimla Tiwary, a government official is another supporting character who impresses the audience every time she is onscreen. Diana Penty will be seen in the role of Vijay Kumar’s wife.  The second half of Selfiee is only about the final face-off between Om Prakash and Vijay Kumar that takes place in the form of a Driving license test, but involves media and the nation’s attention! So grab your popcorn there!

Good Aspects!

The movie has a storyline which reflects many things happening in the real world. Most importantly, the way fandom has been shown in this film is actually a reality that you see around too. Om Prakash represents that common man who does not leave a single movie of his superstar and goes to lengths just to see him and click a selfie, which will appeal to the audience. Honestly, Emraan Hashmi fits the role perfectly here and it was good to see him on the big screen after so long! Also, Akshay Kumar and Diana Penty give some sweet moments that leave you wanting more. Their chemistry as the adorable husband and wife comes out beautifully in those scenes. Here, I would especially like to mention the importance of all the supporting characters, especially the ones played by Abhimanyu Singh and Meghna Malik. They assure you a hearty laugh in each of their scenes and give this plot life whenever you feel a little drowsy. In fact, the characters who have played small roles as representing media have added just the right amount of comic relief to this film.

Bad Aspects!

The importance of background score in any film is very much like salt to your food. It gives it a taste, and in Selfiee, this taste was missing. Especially, the moments when Vijay Kumar and Om Prakash come face-to-face, the background score does nothing except leave you with a grinning face. It’s too overpowering for the scenes. The songs in Selfiee honestly will make you cringe. I don’t know but it felt like the choreography in every song was forced and was not at all smooth. The dance moves were hilarious and the film could do without one, at least not in the beginning yaar!

Verdict

Selfiee has funny moments and some heartwarming ones too that make you go aww, and that’s the biggest USP of this film. The storyline is not something exceptional but it’s enjoyable and as an audience, you will want to watch this love-and hate-clash between a fan and his superstar. You might just hope to meet your superstar someday! Selfiee is an entertaining watch that will definitely leave you with a smile! So go give it a watch in theatres near you and it releases on February 24!
