Whether it be physical, emotional, or psychological, the effects of trauma can linger for years, shaping a person’s beliefs, behaviours, and even future. While some may struggle with the lasting effects of trauma, others may use it as a catalyst for growth and positive change. In the latest episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, DCW Chief Swati Maliwal speaks to our male feminist Siddharth Aalambayan on how her childhood trauma pushes her today to fight for women’s rights.

Swati Maliwal is a powerhouse in the world of women’s rights and advocacy. She currently holds the esteemed position of Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), where she fearlessly fights for justice and equality. In this episode of The Male Feminist, Swati Maliwal opened up about her tumultuous childhood. She revealed that her upbringing was far from ideal, as she had to endure domestic violence at the hands of her alcoholic father who used to often beat her up and bang against the wall. She would often lay down with her wounds gushing out blood.

She also talked about how whatever fire she feels in herself stems from her traumatic childhood only, She says, ”Mujhe lagta hai jo mai itni ladai ladti hu wo kahi na kahi wahi se nikala hai.” The more you listen to Swati, the more you begin to understand that her drive, determination, and unyielding spirit all stem from a traumatic childhood. The pain and struggle that they have endured have forged an inner fire that propels them forward, pushing them to achieve their goals and overcome obstacles.

During the conversation, Swati opened up about her childhood and the stark contrast between her mother’s struggle and the loving environment she experienced at her nana and nani’s house. She shared how her mother faced immense torture and worked tirelessly from dawn till dusk to provide for their family. Despite the challenges, her mother faced, this person’s childhood was filled with warmth and affection when she eventually started living with her grandparents. Her nana and nani both contributed which was refreshing for a change, but they made sure to shower her with all the love and attention she deserved.
