Meet Mallika Sagar, The Female Auctioneer Appointed By BCCI For WPL 2023

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is an exciting upcoming women’s Twenty20 cricket franchise league in India, owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Set to debut in 2023, the first season of the WPL will take place in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, with five prestigious teams taking part in the women’s IPL. BCCI is currently gearing up for the WPL 2023 player auction and for the first time ever, a female auctioneer, Mallika Sagar has been appointed for the same. 

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is reportedly set to make history with a first-of-its-kind appointment of Mallika Sagar as the female auctioneer. According to media reports, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has chosen to appoint a female auctioneer for the WPL, marking a major milestone in the sport’s history. The WPL Player Auction is set to take place at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on Feb 13. A total of 409 players will be auctioned of which 246 are Indian players, 163 overseas players with 8 players from associate nations.

But, Who Is Mallika Sagar?

The woman at the helm of the WPL auction will be Mallika Sagar. She is a specialist in modern and contemporary art and currently works as an auctioneer at Pundole’s in Mumbai. Mallika has an impressive educational pedigree, holding a master’s in art history from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. She began her career at Christie’s in 2001, becoming the first woman auctioneer of Indian Origin in the process.

The WPL starts on March 4th, just after the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa is finished. It will last until March 24th, before the IPL begins. All the games will be held in Mumbai at two stadiums, the Brabourne Stadium with a capacity of 20,000 and the larger DY Patil Stadium with a capacity of 60,000.

There are 5 teams playing: UP Warriorz, Gujarat Giants, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. The rules are easy to follow – each team will play the other 4 teams twice and the top 3 teams will move on to the play-off stage. The team with the most wins will go straight to the final, while the second and third-place teams will play an elimination game.
