Gear Up For Women’s IPL ‘Coz Cricketer Mithali Raj Might Be Coming Out Of Retirement

Cricket is India’s first love and no other sport can garner as much love and attention as cricket in our country. But sadly, this love for the sport differs when it comes to female cricketers. Most Indians could probably name all the players of the men’s cricket team but ask them about women and they won’t have as much knowledge in spite of the fact that the women’s cricket team has got home several glories. But now, it looks like things are about to change with the launch of the Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL). And that’s not all, it looks like our favourite cricketer, former India team captain Mithali Raj might come out of retirement for it! That’s like sone pe suhaga!

Speaking to former England player Isha Guha and former New Zealand off-spinner Frankie Mackay on the ICC podcast ‘100% Cricket’ in July 2022, the former Indian Women’s Cricket Team captain Mithali Raj had hinted that she’s open to coming out of retirement for the Women’s IPL. She shared that while she hasn’t yet decided anything but it would be great to be a part of the first edition of the game.

While the former India Captain has not yet made an official statement, as per a News18 report, Mithali Raj is gearing up to come out of retirement for the Women’s IPL (WIPL) which is likely to kickstart in March 2023. The names of all the teams that will participate in the game are likely to be released in the last week of January.

Ahead of the inauguration of the WIPL, BCCI’s Honorary Secretary Jay Shah announced that the media right for the game has been won by Viacom 18 at Rs 951 crores for the next 5 years.

For the unversed, Mithali Raj retired from all forms of international cricket in June 2022. Sharing the announcement on Twitter, the Indian cricketer had said that her 23 years long career in the game had been the “most fulfilling, challenging and most enjoyable” time of her life while adding that she’s looking forward to her second innings. But with her comeback, the cricketer and former India Captain is set to give a boost to WIPL since she has been the face of India’s women’s cricket team for a long time now.
