“Normalise Crying At Workplaces As It’s A Medium Of Self-Expression”, Says Vineeta Singh, And We Completely Agree With Her!
Crying releases stress! Not every day at work can be rosy, can it? There are times when things do not go your way and it is quite natural to feel upset about it. And sometimes when things get overwhelming, one might feel the need to cry and let it out. On that note, I would like to clarify that crying is not a gender-specific action. Men and women both are entitled to cry. But when one cries at their workplace, it often sets that person’s co-workers into panic mode. Everyone tries to console that person and there’s a lot of hubba-bubba about it as well. But the Sugar cosmetics co-founder Vineeta Singh has recently addressed that crying at workplaces should be ‘normalised’.

In a podcast episode with the Bombay Shaving Company founder Shantanu, Vineeta Singh spoke about how crying is a normal reaction and that it is a medium of ‘self-expression’. Vineeta shared the clip of the podcast on her Twitter handle where she can be heard saying that normalising crying at workplaces for both men and women is a huge cultural change.

She further said that this is a change that organisations that have more female workforce can bring as well. Talking about how she has helped many of her senior leaders understand that crying is just a way of reacting for women and it does not mean that they are experiencing a breakdown. Vineeta Singh clarified that crying is women’s way of processing things whether it is negative feedback or being complimented on the work done. Lastly, she says that crying should be considered normal as it is just another form of communication.
Let’s normalise crying at workplace. It’s self expression, not a “breakdown”, so please don’t “freak out”. Please don’t stop giving us feedback. Please don’t think you need to treat us any differently. It’s just another form of communication we don’t need to be embarrassed about. pic.twitter.com/WdfYbFlnWS

I agree with Vineeta here because crying is considered a weak emotion. When someone in the vicinity cries, people rush to want to make them feel better but that is not always required. People cry when they are happy as well, right? Tears of joy, they are called. So, when a person cries at a workplace, it should be understood that they are processing what happened to them this way.
Especially in the case of women. People consider that women crying is a sign of emotional instability and that they do not make for reliable employees. But that is never the case. We are glad that Vineeta Singh is talking about such things because I never knew we could need a conversation around destigmatising crying!
