26% Indian Court Complexes Do Not Have Separate Women’s Toilets

One of the major problems Indian women face in India is the lack of hygienic and clean toilets. We literally have to hunt for clean public toilets when we go out while the men conveniently pee on the roadside without having to worry about hygiene or cleanliness. *Sigh* If only our lives were that easy! In what comes as a shocker, new data reveals that 26 per cent of Indian court complexes do not have separate toilets for women! That is quite a huge number, might I add!

As per reports, the date was provided by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to the Rajya Sabha. He said that 26 per cent of Indian court complexes do not have a separate washroom for women. He said this in response when Rajyasabha MP S Niranjan Reddy inquired if the government is aware that the subordinate-level court complexes do not have private and safe washrooms for female lawyers.

Niranjan Reddy also went on to raise two queries about this issue – one, whether the government intends to create policies about these facilities, and two, if the government intends to make amendments to the Centre’s scheme to make provisions for women female lawyers. In response to this, the Union Law Minister said that the Registry of the Supreme Court of India data states 74 per cent of the court complexes have separate women’s washrooms.

He also went on to add that the primary responsibility of infrastructure lies with the state governments. Last year as well, the law minister informed that 26 per cent of court complexes do not have separate washrooms for women. A year has passed and the condition remains the same for female lawyers.
