Another disturbing piece of news in the world of crimes against women has made headlines. The well-known Ex-Editor of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, has been convicted in a 2013 r*pe case by the Bombay High Court. The accused was acquitted by a lower court in 2021, but the higher court set aside the decision and has yet to pronounce its verdict on punishment. Read here to know more.

The case was heard by the bench presided over by a division bench of Justices Dr Neela Gokhale and Amit Jamsandekar, and it was held on Thursday. The bench convicted former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal for r*ping a junior colleague in 2013. According to the news reports, he was found guilty of rape and sexual harassment under Sections 376 (2) (f) and 376(2)(k) and Section 354. The court, however, is yet to pronounce its judgement on the punishment.

On the other hand, the advocate representing Tarun Tejpal has also pleaded before the court to show ‘leniency’ in its judgement. He pleaded this on the basis that the case was 13 years old. Tarun Tejpal echoed the same thoughts, and he also asked the court to consider his age (62) and called himself a ‘victim’. The former Tehelka editor said that he also had a wife, and that he did not want to say much, and pleaded that the court be lenient with the judgement. Reports suggest that the Bombay HC will pronounce its verdict on the judgement at 2:30 PM on Thursday.

The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, is representing the victim, and he opposed the plea to show leniency to the convict. He reminded the bench that the girl was his daughter’s age and that the former editor refused to respect her No, and continued making s*xual advancements at her.

What Is Tarun Tejpal Convicted Of?

The former Tehelka editor was convicted in the s*xual assault case of a junior journalist during the ThinkFest event in Goa in November 2013. According to the reports, he assaulted her inside a hotel elevator.

The punishment is yet to be pronounced.
