“Victim’s Character Assassination Started”: DCW Chief On Delhi Case

On Sunday morning, a horrific incident occurred in Delhi’s Kanjhawala area where a 20-year-old woman died after being dragged by a car for several kilometres. The woman’s body was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in the Mangolpuri area and Delhi Police arrested all five men who were driving the Baleno car. Recently, the police recorded the statement of a woman, who was travelling with the victim at the time of the incident. The friend claimed that the woman was drunk. After that, DCW Chief Swati Maliwal demanded a probe against her and said that the victim’s character assassination has started.

On Tuesday, Police recorded Nidhi’s statement and she appeared in television interviews as well. Reacting to her statement, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal demanded a probe against the victim’s friend as she left her friend to die on the road and made claims that she was drunk before the incident. She said that it is character assassination. In the tweet, Swait Maliwal mentioned that when the police caught the victim’s “friend”, she appeared on TV and spoke nonsense about her. She wrote that Nidhi saw her friend dying on the road but instead of helping her, she went home and slept and asked how can people believe her.

According to the reports, the victim and her friend were seen leaving a hotel at around 1.30 am after attending a party. The manager of the hotel told police that the victim and her friend Nidhi were fighting before leaving the hotel. The hotel staff told both the girls not to fight after which both of them went on a scooter.

In another tweet, Maliwal mentioned that if the two girls were fighting after being intoxicated, then the hostel staff should have called the police. She also questioned why the two girls were kicked out of the hotel late at night and asked for proof of intoxication. She also mentioned that victim shaming needs to stop.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police is currently investigating the case.
