DCW Demands Panel To Tackle Crimes Against Women After Delhi Horror

2022 marked 10 years of the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder but nothing has changed. The crime rates continue to rise and women continue to feel unsafe, especially in the country’s capital. In the recent few days, we’ve seen some truly chilling crimes including the Shraddha Walkar murder and the most recent, the Delhi woman who was killed after being dragged by a car for several kilometres. In the wake of these crimes, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has written to the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla requesting a high-level committee be formed to come up with plans and strategies to tackle crimes against women.

DCW Chief Swati Maliwal wrote to the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and suggested a panel be formed which includes Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Chief Minister, and Police Commissioner and is chaired by the Union Home Minister to look into women’s safety and crimes against them in Delhi. She went on to raise concerns about the case of the woman dragged by the car and pointed out that the case raises “serious concerns” in terms of how the Police force functions in the capital.

The DCW Chief called upon the Union Home Secretary to look into the matter at the earliest and take steps to improve law and order in Delhi since India is scheduled to host the G20 summit this year. Further, Swati Maliwal recalled the Nirbhaya Gangrape and pointed out that not much has changed since then and Delhi witnesses about 6 rape cases on a daily basis. She also called the lack of police resources and accountability the reason behind the high rate of crimes against women in Delhi while urging the Union Home Secretary to set up the panel to use its power to sensitize the police and urge them to take accountability.
