Family Of Delhi Woman Dragged By Car Alleges Rape, NCW Seeks Probe
New year, same old crimes!
On Sunday, January 1, 2023, when most of us were returning home from partying with our friends and loved ones to ring in New Year or maybe sleeping away to glory, a horrifying crime occurred in Delhi that sent chills down our back. On Sunday morning, a 20-year-old woman died in Delhi’s Kanjhawala area after being dragged for several kilometres under a speeding car following an accident.
What We Know About The Incident And Police Probe
The Delhi woman was killed after her scooty had an accident with a car and her body got entangled with one of the wheels of the car and dragged for several kilometres. The woman was reportedly on her way home when the incident took place. There were 5 men in the car and all of them were reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The police have arrested the men.

The police received a call in the wee hours of Sunday morning about a body being dragged by a grey-coloured Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Soon after another call was received about the woman’s body lying on the Kanjhawala main road in Delhi. When the police arrived at the spot, the woman’s body was found with broken limbs and no clothes hinting at sexual assault and murder. The Delhi woman’s body was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in the Mangolpuri area.

As per the police probe, the car dragged the woman for about 10 to 12 km after her body got entangled in the vehicle. Following the arrest, the accused men claimed that the windows of the car were closed and there was loud music playing so they remained unaware that the woman’s body was entangled with the car but fled when they found out. The CCTV footage of the incident has also been recovered.

DCW Takes Cognisance
The Delhi Commission for Women took cognisance of the case. Issuing a notice to the Delhi Police, the DCW chief Swati Maliwal called the matter dangerous and also informed that she was issuing an appearance summon to the Police. Speaking to the media, the DCW chief called it a “very disturbing incident” and called out the Delhi Police for the lack of check post or police in the area.

Delhi Woman’s Family Allege Sexual Assault
As per media reports, the woman’s family has alleged that the woman was sexually assaulted whereas police state that the death was caused by rash and negligent driving. The woman’s mother told the media that she left home around 5.30 pm on Saturday and said that she’ll return by 3-4 am. She further questioned how all of her daughter’s clothes were torn and she was found completely naked. Alleging sexual assault, the woman demanded proper investigation and justice. The woman’s uncle also accused the men of attempting to sexually assault her and demanded justice.

NCW Takes Cognisance
In response to the sexual assault allegations made by the Delhi woman’s family, the National Commission for Women took cognisance of the case. Writing to the Delhi Police Commissioner about the horrifying case, NCW demanded the victim’s post-mortem to understand if she was sexually assaulted. The NCW has also sought an action taken report from the police.

We truly hope that the truth comes out and justice prevails. Having said that, the horrors of this crime against a woman have left us shocked. She wasn’t just killed in an accident but was also dragged for several kilometres. It’s shameful that some ignorant men decided to celebrate New Year by driving drunk and killing a woman in the process.
