Spinning A Sexual Tale: What Is An Erotica And How To Write Your Own?

Your heartbeat races, your face flushes hot, your breath quickens, your muscles tense and twitch, you feel light-headed. The world suddenly seems exciting or scary, maybe both. Shivers climbing up and down your back. These are all signs of sexual arousal. This feeling slowly takes over you and makes a home in your brain and certain parts of your body. There are a lot of ways of inducing these, one of the most popular routes is porn but there’s another means to this end one that is often super underrated – Erotic literature or Erotica.

What Is An Erotica?

It is said that “Eroticism is an aesthetic focus on sexual desire, especially the feelings of anticipation of sexual activity. It is not only the state of arousal and tension but also the attempt through whatever means of representation to incite those feelings.” After all, the word itself is derived from the name of the Greek god of love, Eros. It is conceived as sensual love or the human sex drive or libido. Eros corresponds to the subject’s yearning for ideal beauty, sexual pleasure and finality. Erotica comes from Eros and is a highly misunderstood genre.

Erotica may or may not be explicit. You see, In literature, to simply describe an act of sex is more or less pornographic. But, using mere words to explain why exactly the act of sex is beautiful, passionate, pure and powerful — that is erotica. Illuminating the anticipation and build-up to a point where you can literally feel the sexual encounter, is erotica.

Why Is Erotica So Much Better Than Porn?

Pornography is a money-making venture, the very word ‘Porn’ almost invariably connotes certain exploitation, In fact, porn can also provoke viewers to feel stressed, confused or tempted to compare their bodies to the actors on the screen thereby, building up to eating disorders, mental disorders and self-image issues.  Porn is also addictive and causes over-masturbation in teenagers- about 58% of teenagers between the ages of 14 to 17 deal with this. Many writers have even rightfully complained that pornography, by objectifying women, reduces them to sex objects whose core value is to satisfy a man’s libidinous needs.

On the other hand, erotica powers the mind of all sexes and feeds their creativity, equally (inclusive). The key element here isn’t whether the tale is anatomically correct, or whether the art object’s style is realistic- it is to praise the subject, create something to take pleasure in, celebrate, exalt and glorify with words. It’s about how a guy or girl moves across the floor, their clothing, words and hand gestures. It describes a need, a wanting to devour somebody with such intent. It’s a descriptive yet sophisticated approach to everything primal.

How To Write An Erotica?

Now, one of the best things about erotica is the fact that it is accessible and can easily be written to meet your and your partners’ needs. Writing erotica can be a beautiful experience in itself. But, how do you get started?

1. Writing erotica is all about what we might crave. so, it’s time to decide what you want to write on. Is it sex? Is it bondage? Is it a kink? Pick one or make a combination of these themes. It’s all about you and what actually works for you.

2. The second step is characterisation. Sometimes the characters are in a loving relationship, sometimes they have a flirty rapport, other times they’re just characters we already know and love put into fiction, find what you wish to showcase.

3. Thirdly, think hard, do you want dialogues or just descriptions? Decide on that! This helps your story process more smoothly.

4. Erotica is supposed to be special and unique- Drop the cliches, don’t say ‘He pounded her like a jackhammer’, Use something you haven’t heard before, maybe something personal to you.

5. Remember to describe all the 5 senses- The curve of a hip, the scent of leather, the taste of boot polish, the sound of rain on the roof. A compelling fantasy demands a certain immediacy. The goal is to take the reader to the place where your characters are.

Lastly, remember to have a good time. This experience is supposed to be a pure delight. So, it’s time to unleash your inner writer in front of a notebook, a laptop or even your phone’s notes section, it’s all about what’s convenient and easy for you. Don’t put a lot of pressure on your first piece, let it flow naturally and the words will come to you. Good luck, fellow writer!
