Karnataka Hijab Row: Women’s Groups Urge Supreme Court To Issue Stay On High Court Verdict

Yesterday, the Karnataka High Court pronounced the final verdict in the hijab ban case. The Court upheld the ban and declared that educational institutions can prescribe uniforms and stated that the hijab is not an essential part of the religion. After the judgment, many people expressed their disagreement with the judgment and called it disappointing. Muslim students in Karnataka started protesting against the verdict by boycotting classes and examinations. And recently, many women’s groups came forward and urged Supreme Court to issue a stay on the hijab ban verdict.

On March 15, 2022, the Karnataka High Court delivered the verdict upholding the hijab ban in educational institutions. The court dismissed the petition filed by the Muslim students seeking permission to wear hijabs and burqas in schools and colleges. The petitioners have now moved to Supreme Court. They urged Supreme Court to issue a stay on Karnataka High Court’s verdict over the hijab ban as it is discriminatory according to them.
