Woman Raped In Zuckerberg’s Metaverse As Other Avatars Watched. Where Are Women Safe?

I feel like in my 24 years of being alive as a woman, it is pretty evident that women are never completely safe. We were kept indoors and given curfews because we are allegedly unsafe outside but clearly, girls and women have been assaulted, abused, and raped even by their own families. And now women aren’t safe virtually either aka, the metaverse! A woman has reported that her avatar on Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse was raped by a man’s avatar as people around watched and drank alcohol. This is disgusting!

Recent incidences of abuse and harassment in the virtual immersive environment give us the impression that the metaverse isn’t safe for women. Online whistleblowers are now exposing the dangers of numerous metaverses, particularly for women. A 21-year-old woman was raped within an hour of signing onto a metaverse site, according to a SumOfUs report titled, Metaverse: another cesspool of toxic content. The SumOfUs research delves deeper into worries about women’s safety in Meta’s Horizon Worlds metaverse.

The woman in question is a SumOfUs researcher who was brought into a private room party on Horizon Worlds by Meta. What transpired after that is upsetting. She said that a user raped her avatar while another stood by and handed around a virtual bottle of alcohol. Many others were peering in through a window.

According to Meta, The researcher from SumOfUs had turned off the Personal Boundary function, which stops non-friends from approaching you within 4 metres. Meta further said that they wouldn’t recommend turning off the feature with people you don’t know. Another safety feature on Meta’s Horizon Worlds is the Safe Zone button. It’s similar to how social media’s report/block features work. Users that engage in inappropriate behaviour will be blocked and can be reported.
