If you know anything about politics, then you might have heard about Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit. Well, for the unversed, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan despite getting threats and warnings from China. During the visit, she also met Taiwan’s President – Tsai Ing-wen and said that the United States will not abandon the country and their solidarity is crucial. But did you know that Tsai Ing-wen is the first female President of Taiwan? Well, here’s all you need to know about her.

In the year 2016, Tsai Ing-wen became the first female President of Taiwan and the first unmarried one as well. She was re-elected in 2020 with nearly 60 per cent votes. After taking office, she openly defied protocols in order to go against mainland China as it wants to take over Taiwan. Tsai is committed to making her country an integral part of the global community.

President Tsai Ing-wen was born on August 31, 1956, in Taipei. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Law from National Taiwan University in the year 1978 and she completed her Master’s in 1980 from Cornell Law School. After that, she pursued legal studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science, she earned a PhD with a minor in international studies. Then, she returned to Taiwan and became a law professor.

In April 2015, she was officially nominated as the DPP’s presidential candidate. She openly declared her support for the status quo and got featured on the cover of TIME Magazine in June.
In January 2016, Tsai Ing-wen defeated her opponent – Eric Chu and won the election with more than 55 per cent votes and became the first female President of the country. After her historical victory, she was also named one of ‘The 100 Most Influential People’ in TIME Magazine.
