#Trending: Raveena Tandon Talks About Bollywood In The 90s. She Said She Didn’t Sleep Around To Get Roles

You know, over the years my interest in Bollywood movies has slowly diminished. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the occasional rom-com or biopic but apart from those select few, have you seen the content Bollywood puts out there? I watch all these movies that came out in the 90s and compare it to the movies we have today, the difference is staggering. Back then, Bollywood movies had better plotlines, legendary characters and catchier songs. Also, a whole lot of SRK! 

Anyway, I think the only thing that I don’t like about Bollywood in the 90s is their treatment of women. I am not talking about representation in movies but behind the scenes. Women working in the industry were treated very nastily. Although considering Bollywood was ruled by a bunch of rich men, what can you expect? We have heard multiple accounts from actresses saying that they were subjected to the horrors the casting couch and they had to bend over backwards to meet every demand made by the actors or they would just be randomly replaced. That sounds like a terrible environment to work in, doesn’t it? 

Although, there was one actress who never stood for any of that- Raveena Tandon. In a recent interview, she said that people considered her extremely arrogant back then because she refused to play by the rules of 90s Bollywood.

In an interview with PinkVilla, she said that at the peak of her career, nasty articles were written about her because she straight out refused to meet the ridiculous whims of her male co-stars. 

Raveena said, “I didn’t have godfathers, wasn’t part of camps and didn’t have heroes promoting me. I was not sleeping around with heroes for roles or having affairs. In a lot of cases, I was considered arrogant because I wasn’t pandering to what the heroes wanted me to do – laughing when they wanted me to laugh, sitting when they asked me to sit.” 

Sometimes, I can’t believe that actresses were treated like this back then. The industry was so toxic back then. If the actresses didn’t sleep around or treat the actor like he is the greatest thing to walk the earth, she wouldn’t get work. Raveena must be one of the only few who succeeded despite not indulging her male co-star every whim and fancy.

She further went on to talk about how there were some female journalists who, today, write about feminism but back then would be “chamchas” of these actors. They never stood by her either. In fact, Raveena said that they would write nasty articles about her because their ego would often get bruised. 

She said, “There used to be these cabals which used to have the heroes, their girlfriends and their journalist chamchas. What used to shock me was that a lot of these female journalists would do something like this to another woman. When they now stand up and say, we’re feminists and writing ultra-feminist columns.” 

Raveena has always been open about her experiences in Bollywood. The number of open-secrets the industry keeps is crazy. We love Raveena for taking a stand and putting her foot down. She is such a boss!
