This Woman Took Part-Time Job As A Nurse To Be Able To See Her Father During The Pandemic

About one year ago on this day, there was a sense that not everything was A-okay. There was a sense of dread in the air but then within 10 days, India slid into a lockdown that changed the history of the entire world- our jobs, our homes, everything as we know it. Back then, as governments around the world announced a lockdown, we didn’t know how long would it keep us inside or let us stay sane. We were advised to stay at a 6 feet distance from anyone and everyone we knew,  and we gotta admit that the lockdown and social distancing was a hard pill to swallow for most of us.

And while most of us chose to adhere by the rules, keeping our distance knowing that is exactly what would keep us safe, some others chose to follow their hearts. With precautions, of course. We are talking about the woman who took up a job as a nurse in a hospital just so she could meet her father in person during the pandemic.

It is always said that in love, one does crazy things. Today, looking at the kind of efforts Lisa Racine put into seeing her father at the nursing home he was living in, we know that the adage has a truth to it. Unable to visit him due to the covid restrictions, Lisa chose to sidestep on the regulations and took up a part-time job that got her in the vicinity of her old father.

Lisa who herself is 58 years old and works as a project manager for a printing company full-time, started her new part-time job at the nursing home on December 1. Striking a balance between the printing company and the  Good Samaritan Society – Stillwater facility, Lisa works around 2 or 3 nights a weeks at the facility, helping out in restocking the fridge, washing dishes, mopping floors and serving food to the residents and even cleaning up after.

She says that as long as all of this gets her the opportunity to see her father, she wouldn’t pass it along for the world. She says, “I have a bit of a routine. I usually arrive a few minutes early and I go check on my dad and then when I’m done serving dinner, I check on him again. At the end of my shift, then I go in his room and I visit with him and it could be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, hour-and-a-half, depending on how he’s feeling.”

She also mentioned how before she took up a job at the facility, staying in touch with her father was a bit of a hassle. From video-calls to run-ins at the facility windows, they tried it all but it was no longer a viable option when the cold struck. She spoke to her cousin Rene about any vacancies for part-time employees, which is when this idea came along.

Rene shared, “I thought it was a wonderful idea, you know, just a wonderful idea that she came up with. Everybody really loves her. She’s a great person, has a great personality and a good work ethic.” Meanwhile, speaking about how his father likes her taking this initiative, she says, “It raises his spirits. I wish I could be there every day, but unfortunately, that’s not possible. I feel like it’s giving him a little more zest for life.” Isn’t that sweet?
