Smash The Stereotype: This Bride From Kolkata Drove Her Husband To Her In Laws House After Her Bidaai
Ever since I turned 24, my parents have been passing subtle comments to let me know that now marriage is on the horizon for me. It’s very rare that a girl of my age isn’t asked to prepare herself to leave everything behind and conform to society’s gender-biased norms. In fact, a lot of the rituals performed during an Indian wedding are also aimed at serving the patriarchy. Think about it. However, the good news is that we no longer live in a world where women are completely dependent on anyone. They are independent and it shows. Look at this bride from Kolkatta for instance who broke numerous stereotypes at her bidaai!
The bride, Sneha Singhi tied the knot with her long-time boyfriend Saugat Upadhaya last month. Just recently though, they shared a reel on Instagram that featured Sneha’s bidaai ceremony. While most brides leave their parent’s house weeping and sobbing, Sneha left like a bad-ass in the driver’s seat. Literally and figuratively. Usually, the husband or a chauffeur drives the newly married couple from the girl’s house after the wedding and bidaai. But in this case, Sneha, dressed in all her bridal glory, drove her husband from her house to her in-law’s house. And just like that, she abandoned one of the age-old misogynistic traditions of Indian marriages. This might seem like a very small deed but in reality, it breaks numerous stereotypes and we are all here for it.

Who said women can’t drive? Or that brides have to be shy and docile? This one video is smashing all stereotypes left, right and centre. When Sneha got into the driver’s seat and her husband got into the passenger seat, someone can be heard telling her to adust her seat. To that, her husband said, “Daddy, she’ll easily manage!”. When will I find someone who is that supportive?
Speaking to Indian Express, Sneha explained why she decided to get behind the wheel at her bidaai. She said that it was an ode to the couple’s first date. But of course, it symbolized so much more than that. Sneha said, “Saugat (my husband) and I have been together for 8 years. On our first date, I drove him back home even though he had his own chauffeur-driven car. I just thought it would be great if I could do that at our wedding too.” Further adding, “Everyone was obviously taken aback. Mostly, people were worried about how I’m going to fit in the car with the 12kg lehenga! Obviously, people kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to do it. I knew I was!” She said that it’s exactly how she wanted to end her wedding.
