Taapsee Pannu Says She Realised How Patriarchy Works Once She Started Working. We’re Glad She Thinks Actors Have Social Responsibilties

I am dealing with an interesting scenario in my life right now. After having lived by myself for a brief period in my life, I have recently moved back into my parents house. And though I am what my parents call ‘an adult enough to make her own life decisions and own living’, I am only allowed to do it by following a few rules – like a curfew on coming back home by a certain time at night. You see, I like to believe that my parents are liberal and modern, but having said that, I can’t deny the fact that while being all of that, they are also scared and I don’t really blame them. The society, as fucked up as it is, is also neck-deep in patriarchy and this is something that only dawns on you once you start feeling the impact of it on your personal life, like Saand Ki Aankh actress Taapsee Pannu did, when she recently spoke about the matter in an interview.

Taapsee Pannu will be seen essaying the role of a wife in her upcoming film Thappad who refuses to accept even one slap from her husband. Based on the concept of domestic violence and how even little is a little too much, her choice of roles and movies has once again proved that the actress is carefully choosing to open up uncomfortable yet important dialogues. And during one such conversation with her, she revealed how it was after she started working that she realised how deep rooted patriarchy and prejudice is in our system.

She said, “I have understood the meaning of the word patriarchy in recent years… like if the father says you cannot go out, you don’t question that. Your mother may agree with you but she is just running the house, so it does not matter. You have to be in the house by 8 pm because guys can’t control themselves.” And as frustrating as it may be, it is also the truth.

Talking about how the only way to change the narrative here would be to make use of the power actors have into picking up work and scripts that are strong enough to drive change, she continued saying, “Small things about gender parity and pay parity… But you cannot change that by just shouting that ‘this is not right’. You have to ensure that people start to recognise that change through your work. Maybe the new generation will not see the difference, but the generation next to us will.”

And considering how smitten we are with all things Bollywood and cinema, Taapsee won’t be wrong is saying that this is where they get to play a bigger role in this than from behind the silver screen. “People listen to you. They may agree or disagree with you, but they will listen to you. In this day and age, who has the time to even do that? If you have been given that kind of power, then you can use that power in the right direction sometimes,“ she suggested.

She also said, “When, in the beginning, I managed one or two issued-based films and saw that people were listening and the movies had started a discussion, I realised ‘this is power, and one should use it in the right manner’.” And she has.

We are glad that finally Bollywood is witnessing the rise of actors and actresses that want to go beyond the glamour and fame and look deeper into what makes the society what it is. Taapsee Pannu will be seen in Anubhav Sinha’s film Thappad hitting the screen on February 28.
