Women And Men From Rural Areas Have More Sexual Partners Than Those In Urban Areas: Study

I feel like we in India are so used to women’s sexuality being ignored that in general, many people don’t realise that women have sexual needs too. And while it is not a competition, contrary to popular belief, it is not less than men’s in any way. A study has recently released data about sexual partners of men and women in India and not only has it revealed that women aren’t too behind as compared to men, but it has also made other revelations too.

In urban India, women are not that far behind men in terms of the number of sexual partners they have in their lifetime, with an average of 1.5 partners compared to 1.7 for men, according to the most recent data on multiple partners, which was collected in 2019–21 through the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). In several states and UTs, women actually had on average more sexual partners throughout the course of their lifetime than men. This includes the north and centre of India, they are Rajasthan, Haryana, J&K, and MP; in the east, Assam; and in the south, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

According to the data, both men and women in rural areas had on average (1.8) more sexual partners throughout the course of their lifetimes than their counterparts in metropolitan areas. However, in the 12 months prior to the study, a far higher percentage of males (3.6%) than women (0.5%) reported having sex with someone who was neither their husband nor a roommate. The information was gathered in an effort to assess the frequency of higher-risk sex as well as condom use during such sex, as low condom use may increase the risk of HIV/AIDS. Nearly 1.1 lakh women and 1 lakh males were respondents. While there may be some underreporting of sexual relationships among women, there may also occasionally be some willful exaggeration among men.

The study included questions about how many women had sex with two or more partners in the previous year. In the 12 months before the poll, a somewhat higher percentage of rural women than urban women, and married women as opposed to never married, divorced, widowed, or separated women, reported having sex with two or more partners. Overall, the data showed that men were much more likely to engage in high-risk sex, and slightly more men reported using condoms during such high-risk encounters than did women.

Christians, Sikhs, and Hindu men had the most average lifetime sexual partners (2.2), while Jains had the fewest (1.7). (1.1). However, Jains and Muslims had the lowest percentage of men who reported having sex with more than one partner in the past 12 months, whilst Buddhists/neo-Buddhists and Sikhs had the greatest. Women and men who never married were more likely than those who are presently married or had recently been married to report having intercourse with a person who was neither their partner nor lived with them among those who reported having sex in the previous 12 months.
