Study Says Women Should Exercise In The Morning, Men In The Evening For Health Benefits

Workout is essential for our body and we’ve all already established that. That’s also why we all try to take some time in our lives and routines to fit in a little bit of workout. Thanks to our hectic work lives, most of us only manage to make time either late in the evenings or at night to squeeze in a workout sesh. This is in spite of the fact that traditionally, it has been said that exercising in the morning is much more beneficial but it looks like the reality might be different. A recent study has discovered that the effectiveness of exercise actually depends on gender.

According to a study published in Frontiers in Physiology, it is more beneficial for women to exercise in the morning hours whereas for men evening is the best time. The study claims that, while working out at any time of the day helped women reduce their total body fat, abdominal and hip fat, blood pressure among other things but these improvements are much greater when women exercise in the morning hours. On the other hand, men who exercise in the evening showed a drop in their ratio of total to HDL cholesterol, blood pressure, respiratory exchange ratio and carbohydrate oxidation as their body fat became the preferred source of fuel for their body.

Professor at the Health and Human Physiological Sciences Department of Skidmore College in New York, Dr Paul J Arciero says that exercising in the morning reduces belly fat and blood pressure in women whereas working out in the evening helps women increase upper body muscular strength, power and endurance and improves overall mood as well as nutritional satiety. He further added that the study also shows that working out in the evening can lower blood pressure, risk of heart disease, feelings of fatigue and burn more fat in men as compared to morning exercise.

They were all trained for over 12 weeks at different times of the day and the research showed that all participants has improved health and performance over the course of the trial irrespective of the time of the day when they exercised. Speaking about the research, Dr Arciero further shared that it demonstrated the benefits of both morning and evening exercise in improving cardiometabolic and mood health as well as physical performance in both genders. But more importantly, the study showed that the time of exercise also determines the strength of improvements in one’s health.

He went on to add that evening exercise is best for men who want a healthy heart and good metabolic health and emotional wellbeing.
