Sonakshi Sinha Said We Are A Long Way From Bridging The Pay Gap In Bollywood And We Agree.

I have been raised alongside an elder brother, and there hasn’t passed one day when the society (at times my parents too) hasn’t made it apparent to tell us how different we are from each other. From the very important but simple difference of gender, to constantly reminding me how him being born a boy already means he is one up from me in this skewed society – gender disparity has trickled its way not just into the upbringing of many people, but also in industries, workplaces, relationships and more. And siding with that is Dabangg 3‘s actress Sonakshi Sinha who recently opened up about her views on pay disparity in Bollywood, when it comes to actors and actresses.

That India is a country that is largely dominated by men, both in number and preference is no news, but the fact that people are now willing to change that is what has all of us fighting towards that tiny ray of hope called equality. And with the kind of woke feminists that are raising their voices and concerns to address the gender-discrimination, it doesn’t look far fetched anymore. But having said that, we’d be fools to think that change will be just around the corner. Even though the movements hailing feminism are raging, we are still a long way to go, a thought that has been resonated with Sonakshhi Sinha.

During an interview with Pinkvilla, Sonakshi Sinha got candid about her feelings for the apparent and much talked about pay gap between male and female actors. She said, “We have a long way to go. Even for the movies helmed by women, I have been a part of a few, nowhere is the pay structure as close to what a male superstar would get. Honestly, that has a lot to do with the audience too. I think Taapsee said that if the audiences come and watch our solo movies as much as they go and watch the male superstars, we can also charge that much because our returns will be that much. But the fact is that we don’t have that kind of audience as of now. As much as we talk and would love to have equality, the fact is there is a long way to go.”

And honestly, we wouldn’t disagree with her. We do have a long way to go, despite the constant efforts to call out the industry out for its sexist behavior or value yourself to your actual worth and not settle for what is being offered. Also, because the reason why it exists and subsists is because we have been entertaining the idea. Every time we ourselves prefer a male centric movie over a female centric movie, we are party to this pay disparity. And it is this very conditioning that needs to be deconstructed from our minds to be able to demand and rightfully claim equal pay as that of men in the industry. Talent, we still understand but the sex of a person is not a reason good enough to differentiate people or their earning capacity. Period.

In fact, there have been several women in the industry who have come forward like Taapsee Pannu, Radhika Apte and the likes of them, to call Bollywood out for its pay disparity, and hopefully this might ignite the shift in pattern that would acknowledge and compensate women in the same terms as a male actor. Yes, Sonakshi is right, it may take time to fix how lopsided the scale is, but maybe consistence and patience both are virtue.

On the professional front, Sonakshi is currently awaiting the release of her upcoming film with Salman Khan, Dabangg 3 that is going to release on 20 December.
