Sima Taparia’s Netflix Show Indian Matchmaking Bags An Emmy Nomination. Wait, What?

Unpopular opinion: trashy reality TV can actually be a lot of fun. No matter how much we deny it, there is a reason so many people watch shows like Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives and well, Bigg Boss (the king of horrible reality TV). It’s sort of like a guilty pleasure and a cheap thrill all mixed in a series of episodes that have you cringing on the inside. But you can’t just stop watching. For instance, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t watched Indian Matchmaking. That show wasn’t the talk of the town because of the brilliance of the storylines or the cinematography. It was because it was so trashy that it was good. Today though, I nearly got a heart attack when I found out that Sima Aunty’s Indian Matchmaking has been nominated for the prestigious 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards 2021. I’ll give you a minute to pick your jaw off the floor.

I remember watching Indian Matchmaking for the first time. Yes, I’ve watched it more than once. Perks of having friends who don’t listen to your show recommendations in one go. Anyway, it was just a few days after it released and there was so much about that show that left me baffled. From Sima Aunty’s clear double standards to the undertones of toxic femininity that Akshay’s mother projected. Yet, I binged watched the entire season in one night. I even made a bowl of buttery popcorn. The show is intriguing. I’ll give it that. It makes you ship the characters. But bagging an Emmy nomination in the Unstructured Reality Program category? I’m shook.

Reportedly, Sima Taparia’s Netflix show Indian Matchmaking will be competing against other series such as Becoming, Below Deck, Ru Paul’s Drag Race Untucked, and Selling Sunset. I agree that it’s great to be represented, even if it’s for a show as cringy as Indian Matchmaking. But in no world is it as good as Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I won’t be surprised if Indian Matchmaking is asked to Sashay, away.

This nomination has brought up an interesting question though. Is cringe really is the new binge? Just food for thought.
