Number Of Female Voters Risen By 5.1% Since 2019 Lok Sabha Polls. This Is Good, But We Need More

Women’s rights have always been a cause for concern since our gender doesn’t have access to education, opportunities and resources. More so when it comes to voting. Voting is a constitutional right for all citizens of a country in most places across the world. I mean for a very long time, women were oppressed by society and their male counterparts and they hardly had any rights. And now when they do, they still somehow lack resources. But irrespective of a woman’s socioeconomic status and even with a lack of information and knowledge, a woman is still entitled to have her own political beliefs and opinions. I mean I am a 25-year-old woman from a metropolitan city and I chose not to vote for any political party because I feel none of them is good enough and that’s okay because it is my right. And it seems like a lot of women are now empowered by their right to vote. Over the last few years, there has been a sharp rise in the number of female voters. Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra revealed that the 2019 Lok Sabha general elections, a rise of 5.1% was noted in the number of female voters.

There were a total of 43.8 crore female voters in the country during the 2019 Lok Sabha Polls and over the last three years the number has risen to 46.1 crores. On the other hand, the number of male voters has increased by 3.6% after they went from 47.3 crores to 49 crores during these three years. Ahead of the National Voters Day, on January 24, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra spoke about the strength of the total number of voters in the country in a speech that aired on television. FYI, National Voters Day is celebrated annually on January 25. In his speech, the chief election commissioner said that the total number of voters in the country currently stands at 95.1 crores but at the time of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections the total number of electors was 91.2 crores. Since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the number of female voters has increased by 5.1% according to a media report by the Times Of India.

Revealing further details, Chandra said that out of the 95.1 crore voters, 46.1 crores are female and 49 crores are male out of which 1.9 crore are senior citizens above the age of 80 years. He revealed that there are a total of 81.4 lakh people with disabilities and 19.2 lakh from the services. Discussing the newly registered voters, the chief election commissioner shared that a total of 1.4 crore people between the age of 18 and 19 years have now become eligible to cast a vote as compared to the 1.5 crores who registered to vote for the first time during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Chandra further added that almost 25 lakh new voters have been registered to vote for the first time in the current assembly polls in Uttar Prades, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab.

Over the last few years, the Elections Commission has been working to increase the number of female voters who are eligible to vote and exercise their rights. In fact, the commission had identified the areas with less female voters and tried to reach out to them via the local staff and Asha workers in a bid to motivate them to register themselves and exercise their rights. Well, we’re glad to see this rise and hope this number continues to grow as Indian women exercise their right to vote.
