Rimi Sen Talks About Starting Work At The Age Of 14 Due To Financial Struggles And How She Wasn’t Getting Roles She Wanted
When we look at the lives of stars, smiling and twirling in front of cameras, attending glamorous events and looking all dapper, we automatically assume that they’ve come from glitter, sunshine and a dash of good luck. To have made it big in Bollywood seems like the fate of the lucky ones, but little do people know that the road to stardom is long and involves a lot of stumbles, including financial woes. One such star whose struggle started early is Rimi Sen, the actress who has given us hits like Dhoom, Golmaal and Hungama.
A successful and admired star in the industry, Rimi Sen has had quite a journey in Bollywood. From her remarkable acting in the movie Golmaal to her role in Phir Hera Pheri, she had earned a name for herself in the B-town before she decided to step back from acting.
Opening up about her career and how she stumbled onto it rather early in her life, Rimi revealed how she was only 14 when she started acting in advertisements in Kolkata. She shared, “I started working when I was a child, I was in school, and I struggled a lot because I had financial issues at a very early age. Tab toh kaam kar rahi thi, I was like a money-making machine, my focus was money and financial stability. And then this was a very nice platform. I wasn’t looking at fame, stardom, and attention, I never wanted that. Mai camera ke peeche producer aur director banke zyada khush hu rather than mooh pe make-up lagaake aur paparazzi ke saamne photo khichaake (sic).”

Further talking about how she is proud to not have put her ambition ahead of her self respect, she went on to say, “I’m proud that I’ve lived my life on my terms. No one can point out anything. Mai clean slate leke bahaar gayi thi aur mai clean slate leke andar aa sakti hu. Money is indeed an important factor, but not at the cost of my self-respect.”
Talking about her decision to leave acting, Rimi elaborated, “I was right here. Actually, I didn’t want to act, I wanted to become a producer or a director or something. I wanted to make my kind of movies, I wasn’t happy with the kind of roles which I was getting. So that’s why… Jo kaam mujhe mil raha tha wo mai karna nahi chaah rahi thi aur jo mai kaam karna chaah rahi thi, wo mujhe mil nahi raha tha. That’s why I left. If I am not happy internally, I can’t continue doing something (sic).”

However, Rimi Sen did go on to mention that soon after she left, the industry welcomed new talent that she wished she’d worked with. “I should have stayed for a little while because when I left, all the good directors started to enter that time only. Neeraj Pandey, Shoojit Sircar, Dibakar Banerjee; all such directors started at that time. Thoda sa aur struggle kar leti na, acha kaam mil jaata (sic),” Rimi Sen added.
