Ranu Mondal Was Trolled For Her White-Washed Makeup. Twitter Came To Her Support But Does This Reveal A Deeper Bias Against Dark Skin?

There are a few moments in life that are rare and kind of take you by surprise- finding a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly on the first try, scoring high on a test you didn’t study for, getting a perfect sun-kissed picture without having to click a hundred of them. You get my point, don’t you? But the way the world is moving now, if there is anything that trumps all that is when netizens on Twitter actually come out in support of a person who is being trolled. It’s rare and unusual but it does happen.

Yep, that happened with Ranu Mondal and we are just happy that Twitter would actually stand up for something that’s decent. Have people finally understood what is meme material and what isn’t?

With a real rag to riches story, Ranu became an overnight sensation after a video of her singing Lata Mangeshkar’s legendary song Pyaar Ka Ek Nagmaa Hai on Ranaghat railway station. She has been in the spotlight ever since. Though, a few days ago pictures of her from a recent event were doing rounds of social media and not the right reasons. She was seen wearing a white lehenga and gold jewellery, but what caught most eyes was her OTT makeup. And of course, since the Twitterati isn’t very forgiving of anything OTT these days, social media was flooding with memes mocking her appearance.

She was trolled to a point where the phrase “Ranu Mondal makeup” was trending on Twitter. While some said she was all ready to star in a Nun biopic, others said that she was an advertisement for a fairness product. She was also compared to the Joker and girls who edit their pictures too much. Yeah, it is very rude and a little uncalled for. But thankfully this time, we aren’t the only ones that think so.

In a surprising turn of events, once all the memes surfaced, many tweeted in her support calling for a kinder reaction and questioning why she was being unnecessarily targeted. And she was being attacked for no reason at all. Everyone makes blunders. Just because social media is an open platform doesn’t mean we can drag everyone through the mud for the slightest mistake. I really hope this wasn’t a one-off thing. People need to keep standing up for others who are being trolled for no apparent reason.

But here’s what continues to niggle at the back of our head. Ranu Mondal is a dark-skinned woman. And there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s beautiful. However, it’s obvious that the person who was told to make her up considered her colour a bit of an impediment to her beauty and decided to white wash her. And this isn’t a small town India thing. Being fairer or made to look more white is considered pretty in almost all parts of India. Because being fair is really the barometer of beauty, personality, nature and all that be damned.

And this isn’t just a problem in small town India – it’s a problem everywhere. Even at beauty counters in stores, you will often be offered a foundation that’s a shade lighter than your skin tone – the salesgirl tells you this is so that you look more radiant – or more illuminated. Words that basically mean you look fairer.

So, yes we are glad Twitter came out in support of Ranu but we can also see that beauty continues to be at the mercy of fairness.

Ranu Mondal has now recorded several Bollywood tracks for music composer Himesh Reshammiya’s upcoming movie, Happy Hardy and Heer.
