Rajasthan Minister Dr Satish Poonia Compares State Budget To Dark-Skinned Bride With Makeup. Will Politicians Ever Learn?

I’ll be brutally honest here, Indian politicians lack respect for womankind. Over the year, we’ve heard several political leaders saying some of the most absurd, bizarre and in some cases, extremely sexist things about women. As much as I want to get in their faces and scream about their statement, my only weapon in this war is my pen (in this case, my laptop). Last year, a Rajasthan Minister made headlines for all the wrong reasons after he compared the condition of the roads to Katrina Kaif and Hema Malini’s cheeks. As if that wasn’t bad enough, yet another Rajasthan Minister had taken the internet by storm after he compared the state budget to a dark-skinned bride with good makeup. Yes, that’s right. Rajasthan state BJP president Dr Satish Poonia made this statement while speaking to the media after the Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot present the Budget for the year 2022-23.

The BJP leader is currently facing severe backlash for his derogatory statement about women. While speaking to the reports, Satish Poonia said that the Budget presented by the Chief Minister is like a dark-skinned bride being taken to the parlour to get a makeover and look fair. “The Budget presented by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is like a dark-skinned bride-to-be being taken to the beauty parlour to have her makeup done so she looks fair,” India Today quoted Dr Satish Poonia saying.

Excuse me? What kind of BS is this? This statement comes from a leader who is not just educated but has a Doctorate degree. IMHO, kya fayada aisi education ka?. What is the point of education and exposure if our Indian leaders are making such derogatory statements about women of our country? Honestly, what kind of leaders are we voting for? While this statement has drawn severe criticism from Indian media, netizens as well as the ruling Congress party, I am in shock that we’re allowing leaders like Dr Satish Poonia to run our country.

In a country where we are still fighting to normalise dark skin, we have a political leader comparing a supposed bad budget to a dark-skinned bride. In some messed up sense, this man is not only making a deeply colourist statement but he is also degrading dark-skinned women and shaming them. White skin has always had an upper hand in our society that believes that white equals beautiful. Being someone with a wheatish skin tone, I can tell you that it’s not easy to be brought up in a North Indian household and be called a ‘black beauty’ because everyone else had a fairer skin tone. TBH, black beauty was never a compliment for me and that statement from Satish Poonia has truly triggered me. How are we okay with a person like this, making decisions for our nation?
