Pulling Off A Popular Scam, Woman From Matrimonial Site Dupes Man Of 40 Lakhs

Getting married is promoted as one of the most important things that happens in one’s life. Where some get married to the love of their life, others have to use tools like matrimonial sites to find a happily ever after. A lot of people sign up to these matrimonial websites to find someone with who they can trust and spend the rest of their lives with. But it is not necessary that everything goes according to plan, now is it?

Recently, a woman named Suchita Das got in touch with a priest Sushil, on a matrimonial site after which she duped him of Rs. 40 lakhs. The Nagpur-based priest’s brother had created his profile to find a suitable woman for marriage. Maybe she didn’t have matrimonials see aakhein after all. 

In 2019, Suchita Das after speaking to Sushil on the matrimonial site, exchanged phone numbers with each other to talk and get to know each other further. She posed to be a resident of New Jersey, USA, and when the time came, she even accepted his marriage proposal.

From chatting on the matrimonial site to accepting the marriage proposal, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. And when Sushil asked her to send him a new phone, she immediately agreed and also said that she wanted to donate him $1 lakh. 

It was only in October 2020, almost a year since they met on the matrimonial site, that Suchita Das told Sushil that she was sending him a new laptop, phone, and $1 lakh via courier. And for her lie to further have a basis, someone even called Sushil and posed as an official from customs asked him to pay a few lakhs as custom duty. Sushil believing the lies transferred money to different bank accounts as instructed by the fake customs official. And in total, he paid Rs. 40,64,853 to get the supposed courier Suchita had sent. 

Soon after he realized that the woman he met on the matrimonial site had duped him, he lodged a complaint against her. Suchita Das and another US national along with 15 other residents of New Delhi have been booked by the police, The police have registered the matrimonial site fraud case under IPC sections 420 (cheating) and others the Information Technology Act. One of the officers looking after the case has said that the investigation is still ongoing.

Whether we find the partner by ourselves or through a matrimonial site – We all are looking for a partner that we can trust. And when such an incident happens it takes a bit of our faith along with it. Such incidents do happen and it is not always possible that we’d know that we’re getting cheated. But what we can do is take the necessary precautions to avoid falling into such traps. Knowing the person, meeting them, verifying their claims, etc. can help prevent us from getting duped or cheated on.
