Priyanka Chopra Jonas Talks About Facing Racism, Being Asked To Go Back To Her Country And “Get Gang-Raped”
When I think about how racial discrimination against Indians abroad is rampant, it saddens me. We are just clumped into one huge category. To them, we are nothing more than curry-eating, snake-charming, burqa-wearing people who have brown skin and black hair. And as stereotypical as these perceptions are, I am glad we have celebrities like Priyanka Chopra Jonas raising their voices against it. In her freshly released memoir, Unfinished, Priyanka details her experiences with racism. First, when she was a young girl attending high school in the USA ,and then when she first released her song ‘In My City’. We love her for being so real!
Priyanka Chopra is an actress, producer, UNICEF goodwill ambassador and now she added another feather to her cap by becoming an author. In her memoir, she candidly talks about a lot of things including her experiences with racism and people passing discriminatory remarks at her. It’s no secret that Priyanka had a tough time trying to break into Hollywood. When she released her single, ‘In My City’, featuring Pitbull, Priyanka received tons of hate for being a person of colour. It was so bad that people sent her hate mail and tweets that told her to go back to her country and get gang-raped. I don’t know what’s worse, that Priyanka had to endure all that or that’s how people in America viewed Indians.

In her book, Unfinished, Priyanka talks about being thrilled while watching her song ‘In My City’ play before an NFL game. But her joy was short lived. She soon started getting racist hate mail and tweets. She said in the book, “I remember the thrill of turning on the television the first night it aired and seeing myself introducing the game in a prerecorded announcement, and then watching the upbeat ‘In My City’ promo video along with the millions of others who were tuned in. From where I sat, there was no better way for me and my music to be introduced to mainstream America than through an NFL weekly spot. #GameOn!”
Further adding, “My bubble was quickly burst. The excitement of having my first song debut in the United States on such a huge platform was completely destroyed by a storm of explicitly racist hate mail and tweets, including – among many, many examples to choose from – ‘What’s a brown terrorist doing promoting an all-American game?’ and ‘Go back to the Middle East and put your burka on’ and-years later it’s still hard to write this – ‘Go back to your country and get gang-raped.’ ”
But Priyanka Chopra is a global icon and clearly a fighter. Despite enduring all this hate, she has picked herself up and walked her own path to success. It’s not easy for anyone to hear hateful comments like these but if PeeCee is known for anything, it’s her resilience. And well, of course, acting skills, but you see my point. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an inspiration to millions of girls everywhere!
