“And that’s the correct way to use a tampon, you know”, implied a guy to me in a subtle yet condescending way. Of course, since I wanted to avoid making a scene, I took a deep breath, counted back to 10 and assured myself that slapping him with a comeback of how I, a girl, who actively uses tampons, knows the correct way to use it as opposed to a guy who only needed to shove his advice where the sun don’t shine. That was the first and frustratingly enough not the last time that I have been mansplained. There are too many cocky men around who assume they know better. From slight interruptions to unsolicited explanations, men have made it their moral and ethical duty to interject and patronise women with the idea that no matter the topic (especially where women might be regarded experts, say their own anatomy and bodies), they would obviously know more. Obviously though, they are wrong. Not to mention extremely annoying.

And considering I have not been the only woman who’s been shushed by a man in the middle of a conversation, while he explained basic facts about myself back to me, mansplaining has picked on the nerve of several thousand women on a daily. Some of those women decided to get creative and comedic with their frustration over a twitter thread that many are now calling a genius.

Writer, Nicole Tersigni, chose comedy and sass as her choice of weapon against the irritable concept of mansplaining that plagues us, women. She has recently made the perfect depiction of the snobbish manly habit by combining classical art with snooty comments and creating a millennial masterpiece. Having stumbled on the idea after she stumbled on a twitter thread where she found a man explaining a woman’s joke back to her, Nicole decided to do something about the uncanny relatability to the incident. And humour, she thought, was the best way to give it back to them.

“I got on Google Images and searched ‘woman surrounded by men’. Because that’s what it feels like when you’re online. That image popped up – the one where the woman has her boob out. I was like, that is hilarious and perfect,” she shared. She captioned the image as, “maybe if I take my tit out they will stop explaining my own joke back to me” and within hours, the image went viral. She kept on combining such snarky comments about breastfeeding and period pain with 17th-century images and before she knew it, her agent Rachel Sussman was suggesting that the thread could become a book. As Tersigni says: “People get it and they want to laugh about it with other people who understand and have been there.”

And if it were to be divided into a book indeed, it would perhaps have chapters named after several sorts of men like – the Mansplainer, the Concern Troll, the Comedian, the Sexpert, the Patronizer. In the foreword, comedian Jen Kirkman says, “If you’re a dude, you may be tensing up right now and wanting to put this book down and tweet at Nicole, ‘Not all men mansplain!’ But then you’d be the guy who is mansplaining to a woman who ostensibly knows men, is related to men, has worked with men, is friends with men, that not all men are bad.”

Meanwhile, Tersigni also shared that, “I tried very hard to make it funny because that’s what I want to see – humorous versions of awkward or weird or frustrating situations that I’ve been in.” As have all women, it seems. Getting a crack out of the genius series dropped by Tersigni, one thing was sure that women are done being quieted by men who think they are superior to having authoritative knowledge. Hate to break it to you guys, but we do know what we’re talking about and we don’t need you to explain to us what and how we feel. Period.
