Newborn Girl Found Floating In Ganga In A Wooden Box. This Is Sad But We’re Not Surprised

In India, we consider children the gifts of God. We celebrate and rejoice in the birth of our child – especially if it’s a male child. Not so much if it’s a girl child. Even today, giving birth to a girl is seen as a liability and parents are often bummed out and find it not worth celebrating. In a country that worships goddesses, it’s the greatest dichotomy that we consider our girls, burdens? Most girls are killed even before they are born and those who aren’t are either killed right after birth or thrown away to survive on their own.

Recently, a boatman in Ghazipur found a newborn girl in a wooden box floating in the Ganga river. Gullu Chahudhary, the local boatman who also is a priest, found the girl along the Dadri Ghat in a box filled with pictures of gods and goddesses as well as her horoscope. He also wishes to raise the girl as his own, as he believes her to be a gift from the river Ganga.

When the police learned about the child, she was immediately admitted to the district hospital for a thorough medical exam. The police have not released a statement on who will get to raise the girl, but they are making efforts to find the parents of the child.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh, tweeted ”As a token of appreciation, he will be benefited by all eligible government schemes. The UP government will make arrangements for the upbringing of the child.”

There are very few people like Gullu Chahudhary, who would not only readily accept another child as their own, but also take the responsibility of raising a girl child. Especially when the majority of society sees them as nothing more than a burden.

The statistics for the rate of girl children being left to their own devices in our country is appalling. And we’re just glad someone looked out for this little girl.
