New York City Allows People To Get Hitched Via Video Conferencing. We Think India May Also Benefit From A Law Like This.
You know how they say be careful what you wish for, it might just come true? We have all, at some point or another, wished for a break from our daily lives. We have all desired for time to stop or for more time with our families or for just something as simple as a break from our jobs. And while it all came true, we paid a huge price for it which negated any happiness we would’ve felt for receiving so much free time.
Coronavirus has caused a huge dent in our lives. I don’t know whether this virus is natural or man-made (it’s all one big mystery) but I do know that it’s nature’s way of showing us that we aren’t invincible. However, this doesn’t mean that we can stop living, does it? Most of the world is living under complete lockdown and a state of emergency. It’s the only way we are going to survive but it means a complete shut down of everything that involves gathering of people, especially weddings.
It’s extremely difficult to postpone a wedding since the families involved have pumped so much money and energy into planning it perfectly. But, under these circumstances, no one has much of a choice but to cancel or postpone and it’s very sad. We have seen people from all over the world getting married while practising social distancing because they couldn’t wait to proclaim their love. As adorable as that is, the people from New York now have a viable way to tie the knot during these tough times without risking their lives.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order on Sunday that permits New Yorkers to obtain their marriage certificates and perform marriage ceremonies through video conferencing. Yep, people can now get married by a clerk via video call. How awesome is that?
The state of New York has reported over 2 lakh cases and over 17,000 deaths. And even though there are signs that things might be getting better, it is currently under complete lockdown. That is the reason that this order is good news for all those couples who had to cancel postpone their weddings.

You know, I can’t help but think that India too needs to have such a facility. It’s a fact, we love weddings and even a pandemic can’t stop us from getting together and celebrating (Such a wise decision, isn’t it?).
Just take a look at former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s who sparked a major controversy when his son got married in a proper traditional way during this lockdown period. They didn’t follow the proper norms of social distancing they didn’t even wear masks.
Indians are so obsessed with weddings that some of us are still ignorant of the aftermath it could have. Which is why I think we need to follow NYC and instil facilities like marriage via video calls. It might stop others from following HD Kumaraswamy’s footsteps.
