Namita Thapar Recalls Being Body Shamed While Growing Up. Why Do We Boil Down Women To Their Looks?

I’ve been on the plump side ever since I was a kid. And that means I was subjected to constant trolling and bullying in school and outside. I have been called such terms that to date trigger me. These terms, the constant bullying, and trolling have led to me losing self-confidence, put me into depression, and has left such long-term effects that I can’t even count on my fingers. And this is something that not only I faced while growing up, but many others who didn’t fit the beauty norm standards. One of the many women who went through this is Sharks Tank India’s fame Namita Thapar. In fact, recently, Namita Thapar recalled being teased ‘moti’ and ‘moustache girl’ for years when growing up and how that led to body image issues and an emotional eating disorder.

Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Namita Thapar did not have an easy childhood when growing up. In her interview, she revealed how for 21 years of her life she has only judged herself and cried all the time. She did that because she was bullied and trolled constantly.

The 45-year-old entrepreneur revealed that as a young woman she was overweight and had a lot of facial hair as well as acne. And that led to her peers body shaming her. That left a lot of invisible scars. In fact, the constant labels that people would give Namita Thapar made her see herself as only labels and have very low self-esteem.

All of this led to depression. And like some, Namita Thapar turned to food for solace. Speaking about her emotional eating disorder, she said, “I would be sad and lonely and every evening I would just eat one pint of ice cream. I had put on 20 kilos. I suffered from emotional eating. It’s been 4-5 years that I don’t do anymore. For 40 years of my life, I have been an emotional eater. I have always looked at food, especially sugar as a way to make myself feel better.”

In fact, Namita Thapar is not the only one who opened up about this. Her Shark Tank India co-star Vineeta Singh, who is the co-founder of the beauty brand SUGAR, also had earlier spoken about being judged for her looks. Trolls even asked her why was she still ugly if she had a beauty brand.

And this is the harsh reality of women all over the world. No matter the age group or what you’ve achieved in life, you’d still be judged by your looks. No one will talk about how a man, who is the owner of some top company, looks like. But why then do we do that to women? I think it is because we don’t take them seriously nor do we give their achievements the importance it deserves. And that according to me, is just sh*tty.
