MP Mahua Moitra Says Constitution Allows Her To Eat Meat Whenever She Likes, Amid Meat Ban In South Delhi For Navratri
With the commencement of Chaitra Navratri, a lot of Indian households refrain from eating meat, and even foods cooked with onion and garlic. In view of this, the local South Delhi Municipal Corporation mayor Mukesh Suryan has demanded that meat shops in South Delhi remain shut during Navratri and violators be fined. This directive did not sit well with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra. She took to Twitter to express her opposition and said that the Constitution allows her to consume meat whenever she pleases just like a shopkeeper can run their trade.
During Navratri, 99% of households in Delhi don't even use garlic & onion, so we've decided that no meat shops will be open in South MCD; the decision will be implemented from tomorrow. MP Mahua Moitra Opposes Meat Ban Imposed In South Delhi In View Of Navratri
MP Mahua Moitra’s tweet read, “I live in South Delhi. The Constitution allows me to eat meat when I like and the shopkeeper, the freedom to run his trade. Full stop.” The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah also opposed the ban by tweeting that during the holy month of Ramzan, those who observe fasts do not eat between sunrise and sunset. He added that if they go by the ‘majoritarianism’ happening in South Delhi then it should be okay to ban all non-Muslim residents and tourists from eating in public during Ramzan. “During Ramzan we don’t eat between sunrise & sunset. I suppose it’s OK if we ban every non-Muslim resident or tourist from eating in public, especially in the Muslim dominated areas. If majoritarianism is right for South Delhi, it has to be right for J&K,” read his tweet.

Keeping in view the sentiments of the public, necessary directions may be issued to officers concerned to take action for the closure of meat shops during the 9-day period of Navratri festival from 2nd April to 11th April:Mukkesh Suryaan, Mayor, South Delhi Municipal Corporation pic.twitter.com/VbeMQCie5q

I don’t think this ban is necessary and as per this letter, the worshippers will anyway have to bear the smell and the unhygienic streets even after Navratri is over. So, why not issue directives to keep the area outside the shop clean instead?
